Lose the Worry Weight // By Holly Starr Jackson

What about it? What about that thing that is weighing you down, you know–the one you don’t go two minutes without thinking about, worrying about, even obsessing about? With all your thinking, worrying and obsessing, is it getting lighter? No? I hate to break this to you, but you probably already know, it’s not going to get any lighter no matter how much obsessing you do. It’s not going to lighten up until you turn it over to the Prince of Peace, and give it to Him for good. Hebrews 12:1 NKJV instructs us to

“lay aside every weight…and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us…”

Maybe you’ve TRIED to give it to God, and you’re thinking, “That sounds great, but I just don’t know how to NOT think about it!” I think this is a common problem for us because we subconsciously think that giving it to God means we don’t think about it anymore. However, it’s not just a “don’t think about it anymore” move on your part that is needed.

Giving it to God is not a call to inaction. It is, in fact, just the opposite. There is a very important and powerful action that you need to take. It is a spiritual practice called “renewing your mind”. And I’ll say it again, it is SO important!

Renew Your Mind

Romans 12:2 tells us to renew our minds so that we can find God’s will and find what will be good, satisfying and able to succeed (see the CJB translation!). We do that by consciously guarding our thoughts and replacing the worrisome, fretful thoughts with positive truth from God’s word. 1 Peter 5:7 says to throw all our anxieties and cares on Him because He cares about us. The next two verses warn us:

“Stay sober, stay alert! Your enemy the Adversary, stalks about like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Stand against him, firm in your trust…”

1 Peter 5:8-9

You have to actively take control of your thoughts. Again, it is NOT a call to inaction. It is a call to arms–a call to use weapons that will actually succeed against the enemies of our souls. Ephesians 6:10 (CJB) tells us,

“Finally, grow powerful in union with the Lord, in union with His mighty strength! Use all the armor and weaponry that God provides, so that you will be able to stand against the deceptive tactics of the Adversary…. So take up every piece of war equipment God provides; so that when the evil day comes, you will be able to resist; and when the battle is won, you will still be standing. Therefore, stand! Have the belt of truth buckled around your waist, put on righteousness for a breastplate, and wear on your feet the readiness that comes from the Good News of shalom [Peace]. Always carry the shield of trust, with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the Evil One. And take the helmet of deliverance; along with the sword given by the Spirit, that is, the Word of God; as you pray at all times, with all kinds of prayers and requests, in the Spirit, vigilantly and persistently, for all God’s people.”

We may FEEL powerless at times, but we aren’t! You and I have been fully equipped for every battle, and not just for fighting, but for WINNING! We must turn from our tendency to worry and fret and run for our spiritual armor, gear up, and fight the good fight of faith!

Fight the Good Fight

This fight is not one of striving and laborious efforts! In fact, while it is an ACTIVE state, it is action taken from a place of REST, an anomaly that is only possible in the Kingdom of God! When we are fighting in faith, we are inwardly at peace and trusting God’s Word and that is a place of rest, strength and great peace that is completely unrelated to what is going on around us. When we are confident in God’s goodness and His love for us, we can be completely secure and tranquil in the middle of any storm.

So back to my original question: What about that thing? Do you want to keep trudging on carrying the weight of it? Or do you want to use the power that is yours to break out of the chains that are weighing down your thoughts and life? I pray today that you chose to renew your mind, break free and lose the worry weight!
