In my life, I struggle to slow down. It’s hard for me to take moments to myself and be quiet. The only time I feel still is when I’m asleep. Sleep is different from rest. The definition of rest is:
“To cease work or movement in order to relax, refresh oneself, or recover strength.”
How does one cease work or movement in a world that is moving at 200 miles per hour? How does one have the time for rest?
If we don’t rest, we’re going to grow weary. We will feel like everything is moving faster and faster than it was the day before. Rest reminds us that there is peace and healing in the chaos that life brings.
One of my challenges to myself was to take a day off from social media once a week. I can honestly say I have not done this once. I think it would be much easier to rest if social media wasn’t so prominent.
Social media is instant, chaotic, and anxiety inducing. It makes it very hard to slow down and rest when you can refresh the page every minute to find new posts to approve.
Social media is the opposite of relaxing, refreshing one’s self, or recovering strength.
The only way I find my rest in such a crazy, busy world is through Jesus.
Exodus 33:14 says,
‘And he said, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”’
The peace of God is the only thing that allows me to slow down, breathe, and reflect on what I’m missing when I’m so busy.
I want to end this post with Matthew 11:28-30 in the Message version.
“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”
Give your worries, chaotic thoughts, and busy days to the Lord. He will give you rest.
