Okay ladies. Let’s talk about everyone’s favorite trend. It’s new and fresh for the winter. If you don’t have one of these, chances are you have been wanting to add one to your already fabulous wardrobe. The Sherpa jacket. The fuzzy jacket. The jacket that holds all your body heat in and keeps all your worries and, ahem, winter winds out.
Some people think this jacket is ugly, but I bought three of them this season and I have no regrets. Recently, jackets have become my favorite piece of any wardrobe, but these jackets bring me a very specific joy that tweed or leather jackets do not.
Can I make a confession? I adore wrapping myself in these jackets because they make me feel cozy, but ultimately I enjoy them because they make me feel secure. I know! I know! I did not know that a jacket could make my body and mind feel more secure, but this jacket does! There’s something about the material that makes the harshness of the weather or the world disappear. It’s like having your childhood’s teddy bear or blankie wrapped around you.
Most people search for ways to feel secure. That might be through a warm jacket or a favorite song. It might be a girlfriend, boyfriend, or best friend. You might find security in your family, your job, your dreams that you haven’t quite accomplished yet (but that’s another story). The thing about finding your security in the latest fashionable jacket or your busy schedule is that it is not enough.
This jacket makes me feel warm inside for a little while, but if I don’t find my security in the Lord, I will constantly be searching for things to fill my emptiness or distract me from my insecurities.
Job gives us many examples of this but here are 2 that spoke to me:
1. “He gives them security, and they rely on it; yet His eyes are on their ways.” Job 24:23
2. “If I have made gold my hope, or said to fine gold, ‘You are my confidence;’ if I have rejoiced because my wealth was great, and because my hand had gained much; if I have observed the sun when it shines, or the moon moving in brightness, so that my heart has been secretly enticed, and my mouth has kissed my hand; also would be an iniquity deserving of judgment, for I would have denied God who is above.”
This means that when we put our confidence in clothes or money, when we try to find our joy in the beautiful things the world has to offer, it will never be enough. God is the only one who is deserving of our praise and the only one who will be our confidence when we feel like we have nothing left.
I’m happy that God created people who created fuzzy jackets so that I can feel trendy and warm in the winter months. I’m also thankful that God knows these materials will not be enough for us, so He offers us Himself, which includes His confidence, His security, and His love.
In a world that is filled with hate, insecurity, and harsh words, that is what we need to stay sane.
Go forth babes, and shine with your fuzzy jackets and the Lord’s security bursting through your veins.
