Closer to God // By Joanna Beck

God wants to be closer to you, but do you really want to be closer to Him? These two questions can help you learn the truth:

  1. Do you spend time with God when everything’s going right in your life, or do you only run to Him when you’re in trouble?

  1. Do you take time to give thanks to God for who He is and what He’s done for you, or do you rush in to a list of things you need to be happy?

There are different levels of intimacy with God, and the truth is at this moment, each one of us is as close to God as we choose to be.

In Luke 10:38-42, it says that after Martha welcomed Jesus into her home she was distracted with much serving, but her sister Mary sat at Jesus’ feet and listened to His teaching. Martha went up to Jesus and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her to help me.” But Jesus said, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”

We as women have a servant nature; we serve our husbands, children, homes, families, churches, and the list could go on. Have you ever found yourself thinking, “All I do is work around here. Everyone else is having a good time while I just wait on them and work, work, work!”

Working and serving are important, but it wasn’t the most important thing for Martha to be doing at that time because Jesus was passing by. It was an opportunity she might never have again! We have the opportunity to spend time with God and learn His life-transforming Word!

In Philippians 1:10, The apostle Paul prayed we would “learn to recognize and treasure what is excellent {identifying the best, and distinguishing moral differences}.”

We need to discern what the best choices are for our lives, and time with God is the most valuable thing we could ever invest in.

God loves you so much and He wants to have a personal, intimate relationship with you. If you want to have a closer walk with Him, you’ll need to make some changes, and some will not be so easy. But the reward of growing closer to God will always be greater than the difficulties you experience to get there.

The simplest way to grow closer to God is through prayer. Prayer is one of the most powerful forces on this earth; it’s just talking to God and listening as He talks to us. Another is studying God’s Word. God’s Word contains incredible hidden treasures: powerful, life-giving secrets that God wants to reveal to us. The Lord reveals His secrets to those who are diligent to study and meditate on the Word. Do not be the kind of person who lives off of someone else’s relationship and revelation. Study the Word for yourself, and pray for yourself.

Luke 11:9 tells us, “So I say to you, Ask and keep on asking and it shall be given to you; seek and keep on seeking and you shall find; knock and keep on knocking and the door shall be opened to you.”

Asking, seeking, and knocking through prayer draw us closer to God, so make the decision today to get as close to God as you can be.
