It is every young girl’s desire to be absolutely adored by her father. To have him look her in the eyes, have the greatest delight, and to see nothing less than someone he truly loves more than anything in this world.
1 Peter 2 is an expression of the fatherly love for us. As Peter defines for us our identity in Christ, it’s hard to read it and not feel God’s adoring and life-changing love for you:
As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
1 Peter 2:4-5 ESV
When people reject you, God chooses you. When the world sees nothing special in you, God says, “I made you specifically and intricately with my own hands. I formed you for a purpose and to be a living stone on this earth.”
But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
1 Peter 2:9 ESV
Do you ever wonder if God thinks specifically of you when he thinks about this world? He does. Every day your Heavenly Father is calling you to share your transformation into his marvelous light with this world. To be chosen is to be known and called out specifically.
Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God.
1 Peter 2:16 ESV
God reminds that we are free! Free from sin, free from shame, free from guilt. In Christ we have the freedom we never deserved but have been so graciously given, and what a life changing gift this freedom is! God reminds us that this freedom is a gift and that it was never intended to be used to shamefully cover up the dark areas of our lives, but instead, to use it to proudly and confidently walk as servants and followers of Christ Jesus.
Have you felt bogged down by shame and guilt? You are free, and today you have the opportunity to decide to walk confidently in that freedom.
He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. For you were straying like sheep but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.
1 Peter 2:24-25 ESV
Daughter of Christ, I may not know where you are today or the wanderings and doubts your heart may be experiencing, but our Father God does; He knows every thought, every action, every moment of your lying awake at night wondering if he truly does know and truly does care.
God is the good, adoring Father we long for. He gave everything he could, bearing your sins as his own, just so that you might know his love, and die to sin and live in righteousness and freedom.
This love brings healing, light, and is nothing less than the love of a Father who adores you more than you will ever fathom or comprehend.
Today, let us confidently approach the throne of grace and the Shepherd of your soul. Like sheep, we wander easily, but our God is a faithful watcher who leaves the ninety-nine every time to save the one.
God loves you, God chooses you, God calls you his own. You are chosen, you are precious, and you are free in the power of the cross and the grace of Jesus Christ. Daughter of God, let today be your cornerstone where 1 Peter 2 shifts your heart and mind to the confidence of a beloved daughter whose father adores her endlessly, because this is the love God has for you today.
