“If you don’t know what you’re doing, pray to the Father. He loves to help. You’ll get his help and won’t be condescended to when you ask for it. Ask boldly, believingly, without a second thought. People who “worry their prayers” are like wind-whipped waves. Don’t think you’re going to get anything from the Master that way, adrift at sea, keeping all your options open.” James 1:5-8 MSG
In today’s post I want to take focus on one phrase from the Message Translation of James chapter 1: “adrift at sea, keeping all your options open.” I think we all like to keep our options open in our day to day lives in an effort to achieve the very best outcome in everything. That may be a good plan when it comes to our haircut, wardrobe, meal plans, schedule for next week, next major purchase, or where we will go on vacation, but that’s not how God wants us to live our spiritual lives. He sees that as being “adrift at sea”, lacking in resolve, unsure of our beliefs and tossed about by every whim and wave the ocean of life throws at us.
Instead, He desires us to live a life of solid faith, relying solely on Him. He desires that we know Him as He truly is: faithful, true, full of love, and trustworthy–the all-seeing, all-knowing, all-powerful Creator of the Universe. He is more than enough and He wants us to believe that He is always with us, always working behind the scenes to bring His plans for good to pass in our lives—to know that in Him we have everything and there is no need for any other option.
You may be thinking, “I do want to live with faith like that, but how do I get to that place of trust?”
In Hebrews 11:6, it says that those who come to God “must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.” The key is to seek Him with all diligence. That means seek Him first, always and consistently in every area of life. Not just coming to Him when all else fails but coming to Him before taking action to ask for His wisdom and guidance. Doing that helps us have confidence in ultimately achieving a good outcome. When life does its thing and throws waves our way, we know that we have an anchor that will hold us through it all, so we come to God in boldness knowing that He is the only option we need!
As we seek Him with all diligence, we grow. As we grow in faith we begin to see trials and difficulties as opportunities to seek God and bring Him glory because we know that He is working everything for our good. That is childlike faith—trusting our Heavenly Father just like a little child trusts parents when she knows they love her.
God has already shown He loves us by sending Jesus. Because of that we can rest assured that if He gave us His very own son, He will also give us everything else we need (Romans 8:32)! That kind of faith doesn’t need to look around for other options of safety in the storms of life because it knows that God is truly the only option needed. That kind of faith pleases God. Whatever challenge you may be facing today, I pray that you will seek Him and ask for His help. I encourage you to spend time in His presence because the more you seek Him, the more you will find how much He loves you and the intimate knowledge of that love will build your faith to the point that you will come to know Him, not as just AN option, but as the ONLY option for you!
