Divided heart

Before reading today’s devotional, read Proverbs 9-10 and listen to what God is speaking to you today.

We all go through situations and seasons where life hits us hard. It seems our circumstances crumble more than the toppings on a coffee cake. Yet, there isn’t anything sweet about it.

There are two directions in which we could go in times like these. One leads to the house of Wisdom and the other is a path towards Folly.

These two women call out to those in their time of need. They both open their doors to the distressed and downtrodden. As enticing as either direction may be, it is crucial to make the right choice in such troubling times. Your life may very well depend on it.

“Folly is an unruly woman;

She is simple and knows nothing.

She sits at the door of her house,

On a seat at the highest point of the city,

Calling out to those who pass by,

Who go straight on their way.”

Proverb 9:13-15 NIV

Folly makes the weak her prey. She is tacky and loud. Her tactics are to trick people in their vulnerability, using their emotions against them. Folly lures the children of God in when life is falling down around them. She steals their sense of purpose, sending them in all kinds of confusing directions until their fate is met.

The devil loves to divide our hearts into little pieces. He wants to send us spiraling out of control. It’s easiest for him when we are lost in a situation or season of confusion and chaos. When the kids each have their own attitudes and the husband is hardly at all helpful, he strikes. When the paycheck continues to come five days late, but the landlord is not, he attacks. As your mind twirls around with the sin and shame you’ve faced in recent months and days, he isolates you. He spins you around in the direction of Folly and sends you on your way to destruction.

A heart divided cannot survive the ways of Folly.

No one truly wants to go down the path of destruction. It is the presumed ease of choosing based on circumstance and emotion that sends us in that direction.

“The wages of the righteous is life,

But the earnings of the wicked are sin and death.”

Proverb 10:16 NIV

Wisdom is a lady. Her words are kind and her intentions are pure. She sets a table for her guests, preparing each and every seat before they arrive. She’s polite and put-together. Wisdom doesn’t call out obnoxiously from where she is most comfortable, but sends her servants to invite all that she can. Wisdom provides for those in their time of need. Those she takes care of do not go hungry.

No matter how hard it may be, making a wise choice out of discipline is what will lead you towards victory. When you’ve had the worst day at work and you want to give a certain co-worker or boss a piece of your mind, choose gentleness. Even when you’ve worked to clean poop off of anything and everything all day long, choose patience. When a loved one makes a serious life-choice that will cause them to lose everything they’ve worked hard for, choose grace.

The word says, “blessings crown the head of the righteous” (Prov. 10:6 NIV). Your heart may be divided. You life may be disheveled. You may not have even showered today (or yesterday for that matter), but you can rest assured that choosing the wisdom of the Lord when you’re weak will fortify you. It is not an easy decision. There are some times it will feel like the hardest thing you’ve ever done. But remember that the table is already set. Your seat is prepared. Your provision is already in motion. God has not forgotten about your troubles. He wants you to accept Wisdom’s invitation and feast on the food she provides.
