“Friends are like elevators, they will either take you up or they will take you down.” Jeanne Mayo

I have had my share of good friendships and bad ones as well. Relationships that seemed to bring the best out of me and ones that brought out the worst. Some brought out courage, some brought out insecurities, some inspired me to dream bigger and some helped keep my vision small.

I’m sure we all can think of a friendship or relationship from our past that brings back negative emotions or memories when looking back. This is because the people we surround ourselves with are such a huge deal and they truly affect us. It impacts our lives in the present and in the future. So It’s important that we pick the right people to influence us.

Proverbs 13:20 “Become wise by walking with the wise; hang out with fools and watch your life fall to pieces.”

Who are the people with the strongest voices in your life? Do they challenge you? Are they encouragers? Do they correct you when you aren’t living up to your potential? Do they believe in you? Are they living in a way that honors God? Are they where you wish to be one day? These are questions we need to ask ourselves about the people we call “friends”.

Proverbs 14:7  “Escape quickly from the company of fools; they’re a waste of your time, a waste of your words.”

I want to surround myself with people who are where I plan to be one day. People who live their lives with character and honesty. Godly friendships are so important and seem to be harder to find these days. I remember feeling like I was all alone and had no one I could truly call “friend”. So I decided that I was going to be the friend that I wished to have for somebody else. I began doing and being all the things I wished to have in a friend and in a relationship and that planted seeds in my life. I believe God has brought divine relationships to me because of those seeds I planted.

Proverbs 14:8 Message “The wisdom of the wise keeps life on track; the foolishness of fools lands them in the ditch.”

If Proverbs says we become wise by walking with the wise and the wisdom of the wise keeps their life on track, then that’s where I want to be. I want to surround myself with people who are smarter than me, who I can learn from, who will point me to Jesus, who know that true wisdom comes from the Word of God and people who help me think and dream bigger.

“Show me your friends and I’ll show you your future.” Jeanne Mayo

I encourage you to take a close look at your core group of friends, the people who have direct influence in your life. Be honest with yourself and ask if they are enriching your life and if you are enriching theirs. It is God’s desire for you to succeed, but it is ultimately our decision to follow His direction.

Proverbs 13:13 Message “Ignore the Word and suffer; honor God’s commands and grow rich.” Because of the seeds I planted years ago and the people I have surrounded myself with I am now rich in friendships. I know that God will do the same for you too! My prayer for you today is that God would reveal to you the right people to surround yourself with and that you would grow rich in Godly relationships!
