As followers of Christ, we are called to live a life different from everyone else. You see, our lives are meant to be set apart for the work of Christ. Our actions, our words, our choices should all be a reflection of our walk with the Lord. This world is just a place where we have temporary residence, but our true home is in heaven with our Savior and Lord Jesus. We are here as His representatives to be an example to others of what it’s like to be a follower of Christ. We are to spend our time loving on the lost and hurting, and telling people about Jesus. So really, this life is not really about us, it’s about Him.
I pose this question to you, is your life set apart? Take a survey of your life in the next few minutes. How do you talk? How do you act? What do you watch? Who do you spend your time with? These questions will give you just a quick picture of the frame of your life. They will also give a quick glimpse into how “set apart” you are living.
The word “holy” literally means set apart. It is His desire for us to live a life that is a reflection of Him. If we are truly a reflection of Him on this earth, then we are going to look a LOT different than everyone else. When I see the news, all I see are stories of hate, of greed, of lies, of talking bad to one another and the list goes on. If we are living a life of holiness and being a reflection of our Father, our life will be full of love, full of peace, full of kindness, full of kind words, full of helping others. So my question for you today is which one of these descriptions does your life look like?
In Nehemiah, chapter 10 verse 28-29 it says; “Then the rest of the people…and all who had separated themselves from the pagan people of the land in order to obey the Law of God…joined their leaders and bound themselves with an oath”.
These people had to literally separate themselves from the other ones who didn’t worship God, because the idolatry worship and pagan gods had corrupted them in the past. They were determined not to let this happen again, so they separated themselves so they could obey. This was an area of weakness for them, so they set out to do something to keep history from repeating itself.
Maybe there is an area in your life that you struggle with. Whatever that may be, the Lord knows it, even if no one else does. The awesome thing, is that He has given you the power to overcome that area. He doesn’t leave us hopeless or in a state of guilt over our mistakes. He empowers us to change and live a life set apart for His purposes. Let today be the day that you find purpose in your heart to give that area of weakness to Him. He will help you with it. Let us, everyday, be a reflection of our sweet Savior.
“So you must live as God’s obedient children. Don’t slip back into your old ways of living to satisfy your own desires. You didn’t know any better then. But now you must be holy in everything you do, just as God who chose you is holy. For the Scriptures say, “You must be holy because I am holy””
