We have all experienced those times in our favorite clothing stores where we find that one special item. The article of clothing that makes you sigh in euphoric wonder as you try it on. It fits in all the right places. The material is so soft. You can’t stop staring at yourself in the dressing room mirror in awe.
Now what about those moments when the whole experience is the exact opposite? When you can’t find anything that fits or suits you. The times, you buy that shirt or those pants, even though it doesn’t quite fit right. You just get tired of not finding exactly what you’re hunting for at the moment, so you settle for the next best thing. Many of us are living our lives this way when it comes to identifying with Christ. Imagine adorning yourself in the identity of Christ and allowing it to mold you and form you. What would this experience look like?
Christ is the visible image of the invisible God…
Colossians 1:15 NLT
Christ is the ‘visible image of the invisible God’. His outward appearance, deeds, and words reflect the heart of God. You are made in God’s image. Your life should cast the same reflection. Sometimes, it’s easier to focus on the outside more than what your ‘man’ needs.
In Christ we have been made alive putting on the new man and shedding our old man.
Put on your new nature, and be renewed as you learn to know your Creator and become like him.
Colossians 3:10 NLT
So in the blood that poured from the cross, we exist wholly holy, completely forgiven, and able to approach the throne clothed in grace. We hear about putting on the full armor of God when it comes to spiritual warfare, but what about dressing ourselves in HIM. He has already provided it for us! We are qualified! My time at Rhema taught me to read all the IN HIM scriptures in the New Testament and underline them.
This serves as a reminder to us and it starts with the uniqueness of delving into who we belong to. We belong to him! He belongs to us! Awesome! He is the one who has made all things new, created all things, and who wanted us so much he created a completely new being. He is the one who longs for us. Being able to identify him within ourselves is a revelation we can’t afford not to partake in, if we want to mature spiritually and get to know the Lord better.
All the while you will grow as you learn to know God better and better.
Colossians 1:10 NLT
There is a reckoning that has to respond to the beckoning of the Holy Spirit. Our very identities are in Christ. He sacrificed himself on our behalf. We have seen this all along when it comes to the character of God. Every quality he possesses is prompted by unswerving, jealous, intentional-Love. When we identify with Him we see things from His point of view. We pay more attention to our words, thoughts, and deeds. Remember, who or what we identify with, we imitate.
Since God chose you to be holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.
Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony.
Colossians 3:14 NLT
