Embrace God’s Plan // By Emily Rhinehart

Life didn’t go as planned. When Daniel and his friends were taken into Babylon after the Babylonians overtook the Israelites, I don’t think those were the hopes and dreams these men had for their lives. Where they ended up was definitely NOT their Plan A or B. It wasn’t even in their line of sight of what their lives would be.

The scriptures say the Babylonian king commanded youth from the Israelite royal family and nobility to be brought to the kingdom. Here they were to learn Chaldean literature and languages. I have never noticed this scripture before, but wow! This tells us they came from families of the leaders of Israel. I can’t say for certain they were the future leaders of Israel, but I will say that they were at least going to be influencers in their communities and just like that, their destinies were changed.

Isn’t that how it goes? We have it all together and then something out of our control happens that takes the wind out of our sails? It looks different for all of us. Maybe today some of you are facing a death in the family, or a college rejection letter, or financial pressures, or even losing a relationship that you thought would last forever.

I will never forget the summer after I graduated high school.  I realized I would have to stay home and work for a year instead of leaving for college in the fall like I originally planned. It ended up being a blessing in disguise because I gained a stronger work ethic from my job, I paid for my first year of college in full, which brought me such a feeling of accomplishment, and I ended up having a roommate (now best friend) who later introduced me to my husband! We all have stories of situations that made our world a little harder to navigate, but we cannot forget that God works it all out.

“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.”

Romans 8:28

In the midst of a very scary situation, not only did Daniel and his friends hold tight to their faith, they also held tight to being the men who God created them to be even if it wasn’t easy. As I was reading through this book, time after time after time, I saw them make the best out of their circumstances. Who they were wasn’t defined by their circumstances, but rather by God.

They still chose to be who God called them to be even though it wasn’t the way they planned. Because they were willing, God showed up big time and used them in ways that showed how great and powerful God is. He took care of them and I want to encourage you that He will take care of you too!
