When I reflect on moments of uncertainty, the times filled with unsurpassable joy, and the seasons that were so dry, it feels as if relief will never come. The one face I see in every circumstance is the beautiful complexion of Jesus. Why? Because He is always there beside us, within us and before us. Without His gentle guidance and flawless promises, our lives would reflect our frail strength instead of His superior beauty.
Often times, when we think about beauty, we immediately begin to recite everything we have ever been told about our self-worth. While it is important to remember our image was created in His, have we stopped to ask, “What does His look like?”
Individually, we each hold our own perception of Christ, and I think that is incredible because it shows how personable our King is. He makes Himself known to us in different ways. Based on our encounters with Him, our image of Jesus takes shape.
Let’s take a minute to imagine the face of Jesus. What do you see? Now, hold onto this image for a moment. Maybe even jot down some keywords that come to mind.
When I come face to face with my Savior, there is a soft glow exuding from Him. His nail-scarred hands reach out to me, and I don’t think twice about placing my hands in His. There is a glimmer of kindness in His eyes I can hardly look away from. His voice, lacking any roughness is sweet and soft, like some form of musical instrument, perfectly in-tune. The moment my name leaves His lips, I am breathless. This man before me gave everything so He could hold my hand and speak my name. He is a living example of true love and matchless beauty.
While I am sure our images may share similarities, there are no two exactly the same. You may see things in Him I might never see and vice-versa. This is because Christ desires intimacy with us, and when we acknowledge our thirst for Him, a unique relationship is birthed. Just like all other relationships in your life, they each hold a list of defining characteristics and no two lists are the same. Your relationship with Jesus is one-of-a-kind, priceless and incredibly important to Him.
In this Christmas season, I encourage you to remember why we celebrate. It’s not for the golden-lit tree or the eggnog steaming in your mug, but the coming of a man who would change our world. His life is the most valuable gift we have ever received. Without Him, our sin would remain the crutch separating us from the Father. His birth was beautiful and the life He led on the ground we walk on was blameless. He suffered false accusations and persecution, all so we could be loved by Him. Celebrate His magnificent, selfless heart and the god-like beauty He so graciously bestows on you. We are beautiful because He first was flawless.
“But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.” Titus 3:3-7 ESV
