Why Missions and Outreach? // by Marialicia Coates

“Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

Matthew 28:18-20 NLT

This is why we have chosen our theme for this month. These are Jesus’ last words before He left the earth, and everyone knows that the last words someone says are the most important ones. He said that authority has been given to us with the purpose of us going to the nations and making disciples. So the question is, have you followed these instructions? Are you helping people who dedicate their life to do this?

See, I am a product of someone obeying these verses. When I was 15 years old, a group of teenagers came from Tulsa, Oklahoma to my hometown Quito, Ecuador and shared the gospel with me. I will never forget how passionate they were about the message they were sharing. Seeing them use their time, talents, and passion to help others receive hope really inspired me and led me to make the best decision I’ve ever made: asking Jesus to become The Lord of my life.

There are many opportunities out there to answer the call to the great commission The Lord gave us. Your home church probably has opportunities to go on mission trips, outreach events, or even to support missionaries who are overseas, making those disciples Jesus was talking about.

My question is, how many times have you ignored these opportunities by thoughts like: “That is not down my alley,” or “I don’t feel comfortable doing that,” or “I don’t have money to support that”? See, here’s the thing; it’s not about if you like it or not. Being uncomfortable is actually part of what the great commission is about and not supporting missions means you don’t support what Jesus asked of us so fervently.

I’m being so straightforward because I believe we all need to get serious about the word of God; not just about reading it or memorizing it, but DOING it. This month we will be not only sharing about the importance of missions and outreach, but we will also be sharing opportunities for you to get involved in fulfilling the great commission! Welcome to our June Series!
